Lake Lure, North Carolina

Rumbling Bald Resort — Apple Valley Course
Western North Carolina is home to some of the country's most beautiful mountainous terrain. Only makes sense then that the region would serve as an ideal getaway from the fast-paced day-to-day. Rumbling Bald Resort is one such venue and is located in Lake Lure, N.C., which is a scenic hour-long southeast drive from well-known Asheville.
The resort is named after nearby Rumbling Bald Mountain, which got its moniker in early 1874. Lore tells of a preacher praying for "God to move the hearts of sinners by 'making the mountain to shake and tremble beneath their feet'" during a local revival. Reportedly, the next day — and intermittenly for six months — rocks began to fall in the cave system underneath the mountain and caused tremors and "rumbles" that terrified the locals into thinking their world was coming to an end. (Photo: Rumbling Bald Resort)
Bald Mountain — Hole No. 17
Rumbling Bald Resort features two 18-hole courses — Bald Mountain and Apple Valley. Bald Mountain plays to par 72 and just over 6,200 yards from the tips. The course was designed by George Cobb, who also designed Augusta National Golf Club's par-3 course, and his protege, W.B. Lewis. The course stands out because it features five par 5s and five par 3s. The 16th green was a backdrop to a scene in the 1987 film "Dirty Dancing," starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. (Photo: Rumbling Bald Resort)
Lake Lure
Golf is not the only amenity that Rumbling Bald Resort offers. Adjoining Lake Lure and its surrounding area offers a variety of fishing options, including fly and river fishing, swimming, boating, hiking and rock climbing, notably at nearby Chimney Rock State Park.

Apple Valley Golf Course
The stouter Apple Valley course, which plays 6,800 yards, has undergone a renovation of its greens to Champion Bermuda grass. The views of Bald Mountain and Lake Lure are plentiful as lakes abut 12 holes, though water seldom comes into play. The course was designed by Dan Maples, son of acclaimed course architect Ellis Maples, and opened in 1986. Golf Digest once selected Apple Valley for its “Places to Play” list. (Photo: Rumbling Bald Resort)
Rumbling Bald Vacation Rental
After a long day of play, guests can retreat to any of the resort’s 150 vacation rental homes, condos and studios that offer golf course and mountain views. There’s no shortage of area eateries, either. Legends on the Lake, casual dining along the shores of Lake Lure or Pinnacle Southern Kitchen at the Apple Valley clubhouse are some of the top options. (Photo: Rumbling Bald Resort)
