An Olympic year tends to bring an added level of excitement to the sports world. In 2016, golf was abuzz by the return of its sport to the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after an absence of 112 years. For the occasion, noted course architect Gil Hanse, along with five-time women’s major winner Amy Alcott serving as a consultant, designed the Rio Olympic Golf Course. (Photo: Rio Olympic Golf Course)

When asked about Rio Olympic Golf Course’s signature hole, designer Gil Hanse does not reveal a single hole, "but a series of holes,” he said of the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. "We set up the final three finishing holes for dramatic effect and pacing — a drivable par 4, a short par 3, and a reachable par 5.” (Photo: Rio Olympic Golf Course)
Corcovado — Christ The Redeemer
Rio de Janeiro has no shortage of sights and sounds, food and drink to keep tourists captivated. One of the most distinguishable sites is Mount Corcovado, which features the Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio. At sea level, the Copacabana neighborhood is famous for its crescent-shaped beach and its designed boardwalk. On the southern side of Rio is Ipanema, which offers an intense nightlife. Also, Pedra do Arpoador is known for attracting visitors to watch the sunset. ()

Four years after Justin Rose and Inbee Park won gold medals in the Olympics' respective men’s and women’s competitions, the Rio Olympic Golf Course is a public facility and remains highly regarded. A Golf Digest 2020 ranking of the best courses in each country listed Olympic as the No. 1 course in Brazil. (Photo: Rio Olympic Golf Course)
