Circling Raven Golf Club — Hole No. 11
Circling Raven Golf Club in Worley, Idaho, is clearly a 21st-century course, having opened in 2003.

Yet, so much of what makes Circling Raven appealing is the history and preservation of the grounds on which it was built. Located in the northwest chimney-shaped section of Idaho, Circling Raven is an amenity of the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel, owned and operated by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

The resort opened in 1993 and a decade later golf course architect Gene Bates met and worked with Tribal leaders to create a course that accentuated the Coeur d’Alene heritage.

Course architect Gene Bates was provided a massive 600-acre canvas — nearly four times the average acreage used to build a course — in which to create his Circling Raven design. One of Bates’ objectives was to bring the tribe’s history to the forefront. His layout also integrates wetlands, woodlands, and other Palouse Region features to create a dramatic effect.

The course gets its name from Circling Raven, a seminal tribal chief who led the people through one of their most challenging times in the early- to mid-1700s, during the European settlement in this continent.

Circling Raven Golf Club — Hole No. 4, Aerial
Course architect Gene Bates created an imaginative design that combines an array of distinct holes, including the split fairway on the par-4 fourth hole. Throughout, Bates artfully uses the Palouse Region's undulating terrain and vast stretches of unspoiled earth to merge the present with the past.

Circling Raven is No. 19 on Golfweeks “Best U.S. Casino Courses, 2020” list.

In its review of the par-72 Circling Raven, Golfweek wrote:

“The earth seems to stretch out in all directions, with miles of yellow grasses stretching to the Coeur d’Alene Mountains, part of the Bitterroot Range of the Rockies. It’s a visual treat, crossing ridges between greens and tees to see the next hole framed in one of three distinct environments: woodlands, wetlands and Palouse — a geologic term involving wind-blown hills, moguls and fertile sandy soil.”

Coeur d’Alene Warrior of Hope
The Coeur d’Alene Warrior of Hope stands sentinel and welcomes guests to the Coeur d’Alene Casino and Resort. There are multiple lodging options in the Spa and Mountain towers, including a variety of rooms and suites that reflect tribal inspiration.

The resort and club benefits tribal members economically and carries on the tribe’s legacy through its business enterprises. But the entity also allows the Coeur d'Alene Tribe to preserve its rich history through cultural programs that maintain its language and customs, while honoring its elders.

The tribe and resort were named “Tribal Destination of the Year” in 2019 by the American Indian and Alaska Native Tourism Association. The honor recognized the resort's cultural activities and amenities that illuminate the tribe’s history through hands-on tours and experiences, including Native American cuisine, guided and interpretive hikes and canoe trips, tours of the Steptoe Battle site, and basket-weaving and bead-working classes.

In August 2021, Circling Raven Golf Club will host the LPGA Symetra Tour's Circling Raven Championship. In September 2020, the tribe and four-time PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III, who is of the Isleta, Navajo and San Felipe people, partnered to create opportunities for females, youth and Native Americans through golf.
