Ultimate Golf Photo Tour: Primland

Meadows of Dan, Virginia

Primland
Meadows of Dan is not a city, a town or even a village. It’s more of a small community and a welcoming sign boasts of being “a simpler place in time.” If Virginia were viewed as a foot from the side, then Meadows of Dan sits on U.S. Route 58 along the sole, near the start of the toes. Its two closest and biggest neighbors, Hillsville and Stuart, have a combined population of fewer than 4,000 residents.

Yet Meadows of Dan gets visitors from global destinations because it’s home to Primland, a mountain-top resort amid the stunningly scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. In the 1970s, French billionaire Didier Primat bought 12,000 acres of Virginia forestland as a vacation retreat for his family.  (Photo: Primland)
Highland Course
Nearly a dozen years ago, Primat began to develop the land for the masses to enjoy. Noted Scottish course architect Donald Steel was enlisted to build the Highland Course, which sits on a mountain ridge crest. And on clear days, a golfer can see all the way into neighboring North Carolina. (Photo: Primland)
The Lodge
Along with the Highland Course, a lodge was built. The Lodge sits atop the same mountain plateau as the golf course, but scattered about the mountain are cabins, cottages and even a trio of luxurious treehouses. (Photo: Primland)
Outdoor Clay Shooting
Clay shooting is just one of the sporting amenities beyond golf. There is also an abundance of fishing and hunting, biking and hiking, horseback riding and tomahawk throwing. (Photo: Primland)
The Observatory
Because of its remote location in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Lodge's Observatory is an ideal place to spend an evening, gazing at the vast sky filled with stars.  (Photo: Primland)
Highland Course In Fall
Said English course architect Donald Steel of the land on which the Highland Course sits: "When I first saw Primland, it reminded me of the highlands of Scotland. I knew this was the perfect spot for a truly exceptional course." This helps explain why the course has been ranked among the country's top 50 public courses.  (Photo: Primland)
