Ultimate Golf Photo Tour: Puerto Rico

Coco Beach Golf Club
Where can you play golf outside of the United States mainland and still be considered in the United States? The obvious answers would be Hawaii and, to a lesser extent, Alaska, but Puerto Rico qualifies. The U.S. territory, which sits between the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands, offers no shortage of quality golf options. The island is only 3,500-plus square miles in size, which puts it between Connecticut (5,500) and Rhode Island (1,200). San Juan serves as a nice central hub to courses near the capital city. Coco Beach Golf Club is an amenity of the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico and is located along the north coast in Rio Grande, about 40 minutes from San Juan. It features two Tom Kite-design courses — the International and Championship, the latter of which hosts the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open. (Photo: Coco Beach Club)
Costa Caribe Golf and Country Club
The Costa Caribe Golf and Country Club, located in Ponce, which is nicknamed La Perla del Sur (“Pearl of the South”), features 27 holes adjacent to the island’s south coast. The club is affiliated with the nearby Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort, and produced Puerto Rico’s first island green. (Photo: Costa Caribe Golf and Country Club )
Royal Isabela
Royal Isabela is a boutique luxury resort on the northwest tip of Puerto Rico, and its Links Course unfurls atop 200-foot cliffs overlooking the ocean. Stout winds buffet the perched location. Isabela sits on the northwest portion of Puerto Rico, roughly 90 minutes west of San Juan. (Photo: Royal Isabela)
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf and Beach Resort
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf and Beach Resort has two 18-hole playing options – the River Course designed by Greg Norman, and the Ocean Course designed by Tom Fazio and his uncle George Fazio. Pictured is the Ocean Course’s par-3 16th hole. (Photo: Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf and Beach Resort )
Castillo San Felipe del Morro
A golf trip to Puerto Rico that did not include taking in the island’s rich history would be incomplete. On the list of tourist stops should be Castillo San Felipe del Morro, commonly referred to as El Morro, a fortified castle that dates to the 16th century when the island was under Spanish rule. The site is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and is close to the 10 resort courses in or near San Juan. Depending on the elevation, average temperatures throughout the island range from 70 to 85 degrees. Even on hot days, there are the persistent trade winds that can make a temperature feel lower. (Photo: Castillo San Felipe del Morro)
St. Regis Bahia Beach and Golf Resort
Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the 18-hole layout at St. Regis Bahia Beach and Golf Resort in Rio Grande, which is located roughly 30 miles east of San Juan. Fifteen of the 18 holes border some form of water, as the course routes around lakes before emerging along the Atlantic coast. This is the only gold-certified Audubon Signature Sanctuary in the Caribbean. An in-house marine biologist offers nature and birding tours throughout the grounds. Views of El Yunque — the tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest Service provide lush vistas as players make their way around the ocean-hugging course. (Photo: St. Regis Bahia Beach and Golf Resort)
TPC Dorado Beach
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1955 and later renovated by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the East Course is one of two 18-hole options — Sugarcane being the other — and is often rated one of the Caribbean’s best courses. TPC Dorado Beach is an amenity of Dorado Beach Resort, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve property, one of only five Reserves in the world and one of only two in the Western Hemisphere. (Photo: TPC Dorado Beach)
