Many years ago (26 to be exact), I made a rookie mistake by not packing raingear for my first visit to St. Andrews. “Hey,” I thought, “I was only going to be there for an afternoon. How bad could it be?”
I immediately felt like an idiot when the rain started. Luckily for me, the Tom Morris golf shop is next to the 18th fairway.
I ran in, and discovered a selection of raingear from a new Swedish company, Galvin Green. A colorful half zip pullover immediately caught my eye. I also grabbed a wide brimmed Gore-Tex rain hat with a strap, ideal for the wind and rain. Style note: many people purchase a great rain suit and forget the waterproof hat causing a dry body and wet head.
Despite the horrible weather, which I later discovered is normal for St. Andrews, the Galvin Green raingear worked liked a charm. I was dry and comfortable at the end of my round striding into the Jigger Inn.
Galvin Green, started in 1990, by Tomas Nilsson has stayed true to their vision of designing stylish, functional apparel and outerwear for golfers. Since their beginning, the company has used the latest Gore-Tex fabrics and their quality continues to be best in class. As proof, the European Ryder Cup team wore Galvin Green gear at Minnesota (2016) and will have new, exciting products for the upcoming 2018 Ryder Cup in France.
While they are considered the industry leader in water and windproof clothes for men and women, their range has recently expanded to include golf polos, trousers and layering pieces for colder weather. Naturally, I love their use of color. Wearing highly visible clothes in difficult weather conditions is a smart idea because it makes you stand out from the crowd. They also offer multiple sizes so getting the best fit is assured.
Today, it’s no surprise to walk into the proshop at Trump Turnberry and see an assortment of Galvin Green. From their humble beginnings, Galvin Green has grown into one of the dominant players in the game. Trust me, if something sells at Turnberry, it will sell anywhere.
Finally, in 2013, the company expanded into the U.S. market. They opened an office and warehouse in the U.S. and now Galvin Green is found at many of the top clubs in the States.
During the recent PGA Show in Orlando FL., creative director Mats Lundqvist introduced me to the new Galvin Green EDGE Collection. This is a beautifully designed assortment of modern technical (and cool) golfwear.
From jackets and trousers to belts and bandanas you will see all the current technical fabrics – VENTIL8, INSULA, INTERFACE-1, GORE-TEX and Paclite – used with style and function.
The half zip E-INSULA WAVE pullover is one of my favorites. The fabric has the perfect amount of stretch and the black and white wave design is unique and stylish.
No, wait a second, I think I like the E-EMPFLAGE shirt with the combination of camo and stripes in red even better! Yep, there are too many great pieces to just pick one. So the pro tip is to buy them all and layer.
This new collection will be released in Spring 2018 to major accounts. These items are so distinctive and stylish that they can work equally well off course.
Investing in quality products that will perform and stand the test of time always makes great sense. With Galvin Green, you are getting the top of the line in fashion and function.
After all, performance trumps price every time!
