Episode 54: Golf embarks upon its ‘new normal’

June 08, 2020 06:49 PM

The “new normal” in golf on the PGA Tour is upon us as Colonial prepares to host the game’s return to competition this week after three months of suspension from the coronavirus pandemic. No fans will be allowed at the Charles Schwab Challenge, and the game will take on a different feel, but that’s a necessary first step, Alex Miceli says in his “One Take” video. “We need to walk into it slowly. This is the new normal. After four or five weeks, we’re going to know if what they’ve been doing, meaning the PGA Tour, is actually going to make sense. … But that’s still a ways away. This week, it’s all going to be about golf.” One week after his video in which he said golf needs to do more to be welcoming to minorities, Miceli points to Colin Kaepernick’s camps as a model for the PGA Tour to embrace in an effort to diversify the game. “They’ve done this in the past with The First Tee,” Miceli said. “Why wouldn’t you create or support these camps going forward?”
