Poplar Grove Announces 2019 Membership Offerings
(AMHERST, Va.) – Poplar Grove Golf Club – Sam Snead’s final course design located in the beautiful rolling hills of southern Virginia – reveals its 2019 membership offerings, as the club completes a $3 million renovation project.
Now open to new members, Poplar Grove’s three membership tiers are an affordable and attractive way to join the newly modernized club. For a limited time, Poplar Grove’s monthly rates start at just $150 for a single membership package while a couple’s membership comes with a monthly rate of $175. A full-family membership is also being offered for $225 per month.
In addition to its three membership tiers, Poplar Grove is also waiving the initiation fee for its first 100 members. Membership benefits at the golf club include unlimited greens fees, advance tee time reservations, special guest rates, access to member-only events, practice range use and member cart fees.
Poplar Grove is amid a renovation that includes re-building bunkers, teeing grounds and green complexes; updating drainage, clearing trees and remodeling practice areas while adding brand new Titleist practice golf balls. Poplar’s new fleet of 60 E-Z-GO golf carts will bless a selection of renovated cart paths.
The course remains open for play throughout the project, with completion of phase I projected for April 2019.
The historic Manor House, Poplar Grove’s storied centerpiece, will be restored and expanded for larger groups and events. A 100-seat indoor-outdoor dining space, luxury bar, several member-exclusive areas and overnight accommodations are among the planned additions for phase II of the project.
The golf club recently announced the hiring of new head golf professional Jacob Mast. The son of longtime PGA TOUR veteran Dick Mast, Jacob was a successful player in his own right, leading Liberty University to the 2014 Big South Conference championship and an NCAA tournament appearance. He comes from Poplar Forest Golf Club in Forest, Va., where he served as the head golf professional.
The course restoration will be led by Ed Carton, a Virginia native who honed his craft under Tom Fazio, Michael Hurdzan, Gary Player and Raymond Floyd. Carton consulted closely with Snead when designing Poplar Grove and saw the project through to its finish in 2005, three years after “Slammin’ Sammy’s” passing at age 89.
The two also teamed up to design nearby Spring Creek in Charlottesville, one of Golf Digest’s “100 Greatest Public Courses in America.” Poplar Grove, a Golf Digest “Best New Upscale Public Course” in 2005, is poised to return to its heyday under the close watch of Carton, the man who initially brought Snead’s blueprint to life.
Located in Amherst, Virginia, Poplar Grove is 20 and 45 minutes from Lynchburg and Charlottesville, respectively. The surrounding Blue Ridge foothills are alive with breweries, distilleries and wineries, constituting the perfect getaway for couples and buddy groups.
