Starter: Bandon Dunes Golf Resort owner Mike Keiser wanted to honor the great golf architect CB Macdonald, so Keiser decided to build Old Macdonald using many of Macdonald’s ideas and designs throughout the course. They include holes like the Eden, Sahara, Biarritz, Cape, Alps and Punchbowl.
Play because ... : Each of the five courses at Bandon Dunes has its own characteristics. Old Macdonald is as close to a links course as any in Scotland, and could easily pass as a Scottish original.
Takeaway: Keiser’s favorite course at Bandon Dunes is Old Mac, mostly because it’s a tribute to his favorite architect. For everyone else, the course is a love it / hate it experience. If large greens and using a putter versus wedges is a positive preference, then Old Mac is the ticket.

THE COURSE | Scorecard
Best par 3: No. 8 [181 | 170 | 152 | 121 | 130 yards]
The first shot is from a teeing ground — the highest point on the property — to a green that is located 30 feet lower and features a swale in the middle. Face backwards from the green and there is a captivating view of the Pacific Ocean.
Best par 4: No. 3 [375 | 345 | 312 | 217 | 244 yards]
Hitting over a dune to a blind landing area appears a bit counterintuitive, but the prospect is not as difficult as it appears after walking up nearly 20 feet to the top and gazing out across all of Old Macdonald. From that vantage point, a golfer cannot help but wonder how Lewis and Clark must have felt on their westward journeys. The view is truly breathtaking.
Best par 5: No. 15 [535 | 482 | 424 | 313 | 340 yards]
From the tee, the entire hole is visible, meaning where to go and what to avoid — like the massive bunker on the right of the fairway. The hole is not difficult if played smart and too much is not taken on.
