The Glen Club | 8.2 Score

The tee shot into the 218-yard, par-3, 11th green is daunting with a trio of bunkers and a pond sitting prominently in a golfer’s sightline. (Photo: KemperSports)

Starter: Chicago has a bevy of quality courses, but most are private. The Glen Club, built on the former Glenview Naval Air Station, has all the amenities of a private club, but is a public venue.

Play because …: Most public courses begin to show wear as the golf season goes on, but The Glen Club did not. The course is well maintained and features speedy greens.

Takeaway: The course conditions make this a must visit. The Tom Fazio design is above adequate, but does not provide the “wow factor” that can be found at many courses in the Chicago area. Keep in mind, the course was once a runway. The staff helps provide a great customer experience and the food, especially the fresh-fried potato chips, are worth a post-round taste.

THE COURSE (Scorecard)

Best par 3: 11th hole (218 yards). Designed similar to the 13th hole at TPC Sawgrass. The hole has water on the left, but a much more comfortable opening to the green on the right. The bottom line is that the hole is difficult to play, but provides many options.

Best par 4: 13th hole (369 yards). The bunker on the right can be carried, which leaves a little wedge approach on the shortish hole. A player willing to fly the bunker, though, must be careful because a pond farther up on the right can come into play. This is a very solid risk/reward hole.

Best par 5: 14th hole (540 yards). A wide open fairway makes the hole play easy off the tee. As the whole meanders to the left, though, the hole becomes anything but easy and the green is well guarded by bunkers.
