Fans attending next week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club can most assuredly expect hot weather. So, whether cooling off in a sports bar or a crack-the-credit-card restaurant, know that Charlotte has serious craft beer game, with more than 27 breweries and counting.
When ordering, here is a cellphone-worthy cheat sheet of five popular local brews.
Hop, Drop, N’ Roll IPA (NoDa Brewing Co.)
This is the beer that put Charlotte on the map, because it was the World Champion
American-style IPA in 2014. Bam. If you like IPAs, and citrus hops are your thing, then this is triple hopped up, and has a crisp, citrusy feel. Plus, the can is really cool looking.
OMB Copper (Olde Mecklenburg Brewery)
To display a bit of hipness, just ask the bartender for a “Copper,” Charlotte’s best-seller.
In other words, it’s a brown ale that has a simple, fresh taste. Nothing too complicated, but easy to drink and known for its copper color. This beer can be found on draft almost everywhere.

Sugar Creek Pale Ale (Sugar Creek Brewing)
When European malt marries American hops, this is their beer baby. When quaffing more than one with friends after a round, this medium-bodied ale is a hole-in-one. Expect a little trickery on the tongue, though, as hop flavors of pine, fruit, citrus, and grapefruit will appear.
Sycamore Countryside American IPA (Sycamore Brewing)
You’re not driving a tractor. You’re speeding an ATV across the farm. This IPA pops with hop bursted tropical fruits and a grapefruit finish. Also know that Sycamore’s brewery/taproom is a big social scene complete with Friday food trucks. Sycamore is only 8 miles from Quail Hollow Club.
Birdsong Jalapeno Pale Ale (Birdsong Brewing Co.)
Jalapenos and beer? Don’t be scared. Birdsong cuts up fresh jalapenos, hand-extracts the seeds, and adds them to its Free Will Pale Ale. The result is a mellow pepper flavor and aroma, but no jalapeno heat. It’s a unique taste, and a way to show off newfound Charlotte insider game.
