2020 Colonial: Top 5 in world commit to PGA Tour restart

Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy will lead the PGA Tour's 'A-list' talent in the season restart at Colonial.

Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson lead a strong list of early commitments for the PGA Tour’s restart in 2 weeks at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but don't expect golf's biggest name to show in Fort Worth

When the PGA Tour returns to action in less than two weeks, the stars will turn out for the season restart.

The Charles Schwab Challenge has received commitments from the top five players in the Official World Golf Ranking, according to the field list on the tournament’s website.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who is No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, will join No. 2 Jon Rahm of Spain and Americans Brooks Koepka (3), Justin Thomas (4) and Dustin Johnson (5) at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, for the June 11-14 event. McIlroy, who teamed with Johnson in a recent exhibition match to raise money for coronavirus-relief efforts, said he will play in the first three tournaments in the Tour’s restart.

Americans Patrick Reed and Webb Simpson, who stand Nos. 7 and 9, respectively, in the world ranking, also are listed as entrants at Colonial. The tournament has attracted 15 of the top 20 players in the world, a strength of field that Colonial hasn’t attracted in years, perhaps ever. Defending champion Kevin Na, at No. 30 in the world, also has committed to play.

However, the biggest name in golf, Tiger Woods, is missing from the field list and likely won’t be added. Woods, No. 11 in the world and tied with the late Sam Snead as the all-time winningest player on the PGA Tour, with 82 victories, has played the Fort Worth stop only once in his nearly quarter century of professional golf. Woods played Colonial in 1997, his first full season on the PGA Tour, and tied for fourth.
