Number of players from Europe’s winning 12-man 2018 Ryder Cup team who will be entered in the BMW PGA Championship, which begins Thursday at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, England (tee times). Rory McIlroy, who is No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is the highest-ranked player competing from Europe’s team. The others: Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Francesco Molinari, Alex Noren, Ian Poulter, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. The BMW PGA will be the first event counting toward qualifying for captain Padraig Harrington’s team that will face the Americans at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.


Age, in years, of American Akshay Bhatia, who will make his professional debut this week at the PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss. (tee times). Bhatia, of Wake Forest, N.C., recently competed in the Walker Cup, earning two points for the victorious Americans as the youngest player in the history of the biennial matches against Great Britain & Ireland’s top amateurs. The reigning Jones Cup champion will end his amateur career at No. 5 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The left-handed-playing Bhatia will be competing this week at Country Club of Jackson on a sponsor exemption. He played in two professional events in 2019, missing the cut at the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship and finishing T-42 at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Championship, into which he had Monday qualified.
