Confirmed: By Norway’s Viktor Hovland, that he will make his European Tour debut as a professional next week in the BMW PGA Championship. Hovland, 21, the 2018 U.S. Amateur champion, already has secured a PGA Tour card via the recent Korn Ferry Tour finals. The BMW will feature some of the game’s top players, notably four-time major champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, defending champion Francesco Molinari of Italy, British Open champion Shane Lowry of Ireland and Americans Tony Finau, Billy Horschel and Patrick Reed. The tournament, to be played Sept. 19-22 at Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water, England, marks the beginning of qualifying for Europe’s 2020 Ryder Cup team.


Announced: By American Express, a multiyear deal to sponsor the PGA Tour’s annual winter tournament in La Quinta, Calif. The tournament, which dates to 1960 and was hosted by Bob Hope for decades until the entertainer’s death in 2003, will be known as The American Express. It will be played Jan. 16-19 at PGA West’s Stadium Course as the third event of 2020 and the first in the continental U.S. (schedule).
