Announced: By the U.S. Golf Association, that it has boosted the purses for the U.S. Open and the U.S. Women’s Open by $500,000 each. The move increased the amount of the U.S. Open prize money to $12.5 million and the Women’s Open to $5.5 million. For the first time, the Women’s Open, which will be played this week at Country Club of Charleston (S.C.), will pay its winner $1 million.
