Number of birdies that Shane Lowry made, against no bogeys, in shooting 6-under 65 for the first-round lead Thursday at the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage. Lowry, 32, of Ireland, hit 13 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, S.C., en route to opening a one-stroke advantage. Daniel Berger, Luke List, Ryan Moore, Trey Mullinax and Ryan Palmer were tied for second at 66. Dustin Johnson, who is No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking and coming off a co-runner-up at the Masters, birdied two of his final seven holes to shoot 68 (scores).


Score for co-leaders Robby Shelton and Chase Seiffert in the first round of the Tour’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Championship at the Senator Course in Prattville, Ala. Shelton, who grew up in Wilmer, Ala., competed in numerous tournaments on the Senator Course before he played college golf for three years at Alabama. At 7 under, Shelton and Seiffert led former PGA Tour winners Matt Every and Chad Campbell and Austin Smotherman, who were tied at 66 (scores).


Combined number of victories in Major League Baseball for former pitchers John Smoltz and Shigetoshi Hasegawa, who will be playing on sponsor exemptions at the Champions Tour’s Mitsubishi Electric Classic, which begins today at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga. Smoltz, 51, went 213-155 in 20 seasons, mostly with the Atlanta Braves. Hasegawa, 50, went 45-43 in nine seasons with the Anaheim Angels and Seattle Mariners. Smoltz missed the cut at last year’s U.S. Senior Open and tied for 53rd in the Cologuard Classic in March. Hasegawa will be making his Champions Tour debut (tee times).
