Confirmed: By Tiger Woods, that he will not play this week’s Valspar Championship, the final stop on the four-tournament Florida Swing, but will compete next week in the WGC Match Play at Austin (Texas) Country Club. Woods tied for second last year in his debut at the Valspar, which is played at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Fla. Woods has not competed in the 64-man Match Play since 2013, when it was a single-elimination tournament held at Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz., and he lost in the opening round. In 2015, the Match Play adopted a pool-play model that guarantees three rounds. Woods has not competed at Austin Country Club, which has hosted the Match Play since 2016. The Match Play likely will be Woods’ final tournament preparation for the Masters, which he has won four times and will be played April 11-14.


Canceled: The Azalea Invitational, a staple of the men’s amateur schedule since 1946, because Country Club of Charleston in South Carolina will be playing host to the U.S. Women’s Open later this spring, the club’s Board of Directors announced. The Azalea had been scheduled for March 21-24. The USWO will be played May 30-June 2.
