After 12 years of being contested in May, the Players returns to its customary March slot. Tiger Woods (2001) and Adam Scott (2004) won the tournament in March, when TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course is overseeded with winter ryegrass and plays differently than it does in May, when the Bermudagrass thrives. Play begins Thursday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (tee times).

Odds for American Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy, the co-favorites, to win this week’s Players Championship, according to Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. Johnson also is the favorite, at 10-1, to win the Masters in four weeks.

Number of career sacks for Kyle Williams in 13 seasons as a defensive tackle with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Williams, 35, and partner Greg Berthelot won the qualifying medal Monday with an 8-under 64 at the Country Club of Louisiana to advance to the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball on May 25-29 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore. Berthelot, the 2011 Louisiana Amateur champion who played college golf at Centenary, had an eagle and four birdies, but Williams pulled his weight with a 12-foot birdie putt and other clutch play.
