Number of years ago that Scotland’s Paul Lawrie won his first of two Qatar Masters titles on the European Tour. Five months after Lawrie stormed to a seven-stroke victory at Doha Golf Club, he won the British Open in a playoff after Jean van de Velde’s memorable collapse on the 18th hole at Carnoustie. Lawrie, 50, an eight-time winner on the European Tour, returns to Doha for the 22nd edition of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, which begins today. He will be paired with fellow Scot Sam Locke, the low amateur at the 2018 British Open and a product of the Paul Lawrie Foundation, and Sweden’s Robert Karlsson (tee times).
