Named: By U.S. captain Tiger Woods, as his assistants for the Presidents Cup, Fred Couples, Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker. The biennial matches against the Internationals will be played Dec. 12-15 at Royal Melbourne (Australia) Golf Club. Couples, a three-time Presidents Cup captain, and Woods served as assistants on Stricker’s U.S. team that won the 2017 matches, 19-11. The Americans lead the series, 10-1-1.

Declined: By David Ortiz, who caddied for Matt Kuchar when the American won the Mayakoba Golf Classic in the fall, an offer of an additional $15,000, according to a Golf.com report. Ortiz, a Mayakoba Resort caddie who was pressed into service when Kuchar’s regular caddie was unable to make the trip, had agreed to be paid $3,000 for the week plus an unspecified portion of Kuchar’s winnings, if any. Tour caddies typically receive a 10-percent bonus from a tournament winner. Kuchar won the $1.296 million first-place prize and paid Ortiz $5,000. After a payout of $3,000 was disclosed by former Tour player Tom Gillis on social media, Kuchar denied the report, saying: “That’s not a story. It wasn’t 10 percent. It wasn’t $3,000.” Ortiz, known as El Tucan, wrote three emails to Kuchar’s agent, Mark Steinberg, asking for a “fair amount,” which he said should be $50,000, Golf.com reported. Steinberg reportedly offered $15,000, which Ortiz declined, saying he was underpaid.
