Disclosed: By broadcaster Johnny Miller, that his final day at NBC will be the third round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, on Saturday, Feb. 2. The network intends to honor Miller, who has been NBC’s lead golf analyst since 1990, during the third round and focus on the champion on Feb. 3. Paul Azinger, Miller’s replacement with NBC, will call Sunday’s play. The final round of the Phoenix Open will be played the same day as the Super Bowl.
Announced: By Augusta National Golf Club, the local qualifying schedule for the 2020 Drive, Chip and Putt. Qualifying has been expanded to 313 sites for local, subregional and regional levels and will begin May 4. The top 80 performers – 40 boys and 40 girls, in age divisions for 7-15 – will earn invitations to the Drive, Chip and Putt finals on April 5, 2020, the Sunday before the Masters, at Augusta National Golf Club.
Selected: Tiger Woods, as the Ben Hogan Award winner, by the Golf Writers Association of America. Woods returned from spinal-fusion surgery last year and won the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship, rising to No. 13 in the Official World Golf Ranking. The award is given to a player who has overcome a physical handicap or serious injury to remain active in golf. Woods will be presented the award April 10 in Augusta, Ga.
