Died: James R. Hand, former president of the U.S. Golf Association, on Nov. 13. He was 101. Hand, a longtime bank president who lived most of his life in Ossining and Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., served as the USGA’s president in 1984-85. He credited golf – notably that he walked nearly every round, into his 90s – for his longevity.
Announced: By the LPGA, that its 2019 season finale will double its purse, to $5 million, with the winner receiving $1.5 million, the largest prize in women’s golf. The CME Group Tour Championship also will reduce its field size, to 60 players, and every player will have a mathematical chance to win the season title. In this year’s season finale, which begins today at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla., 72 players will compete for $2.5 million.
