Number of strokes by which Ariya Jutanugarn leads after 36 holes of the Blue Bay LPGA. Jutanugarn, 22, of Thailand, shot 4-under 68 for a 7-under 137 total at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Club on Hainan Island, China. Jutanugarn, who is No. 1 in the world rankings, is seeking her fourth victory of the season and 11th since joining the LPGA in 2015. She leads older sister Moriya Jutanugarn, American Jennifer Song and Mexico’s Gaby Lopez, all of whom shot 71 to stand at 3-under 141 (scores).
Number of birdies that Sergio Garcia made in shooting a bogey-free 64 for the first-round lead at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Garcia, 38, of Spain, ran off two stretches of three consecutive birdies – on Nos. 9-11 and 15-17 – at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa. He is seeking his 16th career victory on the European Tour and second in the past four weeks. South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel, like Garcia a former Masters champion, France’s Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Finland’s Mikko Korhonen shared second at 4-under 68 (scores). The Nedbank Golf Challenge is the penultimate tournament on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai (rankings), which concludes next week with the DP World Tour Championship in the United Arab Emirates.
First-round scores for Americans Paul Goydos and Tim Petrovic, the co-leaders at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix (Ariz.) Country Club. American Scott McCarron trailed by two (scores). Bernhard Langer, who leads the Champions Tour’s season points standings, holed out with a greenside pitch for eagle on the par-5 first hole but could manage only a 1-under 70 and stood seven strokes off the pace (season standings).
