Final score as Shannon Johnson defeated defending champion Kelsey Chugg with a tap-in birdie on the par-5 18th hole Thursday to win the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis. Johnson, 35, of Norton, Mass., was the medalist in the 36-hole stroke-play qualifier. She made six birdies in the final match, including two of the last three holes, to erase Chugg’s 1-up lead through 15 holes. Chugg, 27, of Salt Lake City, was seeking to become the fourth back-to-back champion in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur (scores).

Final score as Kevin O’Connell defeated Brett Boner in a matchup of North Carolinians for the U.S. Mid-Amateur title at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club. O’Connell, 30, a golf-equipment representative from Cary, raced to a 5-up lead through 14 holes in the scheduled 36-hole final. Boner, 44, a financial adviser from Charlotte, got no closer than 3 up through 31 holes before O’Connell closed with two pars to win. O’Connell earns berths in next year’s Masters and U.S. Open (scores).
