Percentage decline in rounds played in the U.S. in July from the same month a year ago, according to Golf Datatech’s National Rounds Played Report. For the first seven months of the year, rounds played are down 2.9 percent compared with the same time period in 2017. The Mid-Atlantic region of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania led the decline in July, with rounds played off 8.5 percent. Nationally, play at public-access courses in July was down 1.4 percent from the same month in 2017, and play at private courses was off 2.3 percent in the month. Not all regions of the country experienced declines in play. In the Mountain region of the western U.S., play increased 4 percent, spurred by a decline in rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures.

Number of women who have won consecutive U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur titles. Defending champion Kelsey Chugg, 27, of Salt Lake City, will get a chance to become the fourth when she meets Shannon Johnson, 35, of Norton, Mass., in today’s 18-hole final match at 9 a.m. CDT at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis. With a victory, Chugg would join Meghan Stasi (2006, 2007), Sarah LeBrun Ingram (1993, 1994) and Ellen Port (1995, 1996) as repeat champions (scores).
