Withdrew: Rickie Fowler, from this week’s Dell Technologies Championship, citing a pulled abdomen, according to PGATour.com. Fowler hasn’t played since three weeks ago, when he tied for 12th in the PGA Championship. He also pulled out of last week’s Northern Trust, the FedEx Cup playoff opener, citing the same injury. He is 22nd in the FedEx Cup standings. Fowler and Francesco Molinari were the only golfers among the top 100 in the standings expected to miss this week’s play at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. After this week, the top 70 and ties advance to the BMW Championship.


Disclosed: By William McGirt, that he will undergo surgery on his left hip within the next two weeks, according to GolfChannel.com. Because of the anticipated recovery time, McGirt, 39, might miss all of the 2019-20 season, he said. McGirt missed the cut at the recent Northern Trust, ending his season.


Awarded: To Braden Thornberry, the Mark H. McCormack Medal as the top men’s player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Thornberry, 21, of Olive Branch, Miss., and a senior at Ole Miss, gains exemptions into next year’s U.S. Open and British Open, provided that he remains an amateur. Thornberry won the 2017 NCAA title.
