American Rickie Fowler, the 2015 Scottish Open champion, shot 64 to join a group of five in second place at the European Tour’s annual prelude to the next week’s British Open. Number of players who broke par in the first round of the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill. American Elaine Crosby shot 3-under 70 to hold a one-stroke lead against England’s Laura Davies and Trish Johnson and Sweden’s Liselotte Neumann. Sweden’s Helen Alfredsson, at 1-under 72, was the only other player under par (scores).


Number of consecutive birdies that American Steve Wheatcroft made to finish a 9-under 62 for the first-round lead in the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic at TPC John Deere in Silvis, Ill. American Michael Kim stood second at 63 (scores).


Best finish in 15 starts this season on the LPGA for Thidapa Suwannapura, who shot 6-under 65 for the first-round lead in the Marathon Classic. In seeking her first LPGA victory, Suwannapura, 25, of Thailand, offset four bogeys with 10 birdies at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio, with no pars after the seventh hole. Americans Jacqui Concolino and Katelyn Dambaugh and defending champion In-Kyung Kim of South Korea were among seven tied for second at 66 (scores).


First-round score for American Cameron Champ, whose 10-under total leads the Tour’s Utah Championship. Champ, 23, in his first year on the developmental tour, toured Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, Utah, without a bogey. Champ has posted four consecutive top-10 finishes in climbing to 27th on the tour’s money list. Americans Luke Guthrie, Steven Ihm and Martin Trainer shot 63 (scores).


First-round score for American co-leaders Kenny Perry and Mike Small in the Constellation Senior Players Championship at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill. Perry, the 2013 Senior Players winner, and Small, the men’s golf coach at Illinois, held a one-shot lead over Americans Bart Bryant, Glen Day and Jeff Maggert (scores).
