Number of career major championships won by the three players in the 8:02 a.m. EDT pairing on the 10th tee for today’s first round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. Phil Mickelson (five majors), Rory McIlroy (four) and Jordan Spieth (three) lack only one piece of the major-championship puzzle for the modern career Grand Slam. With a victory this week, Mickelson, who turns 48 on Saturday, would become only the sixth player in history to achieve the feat, joining Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen and Tiger Woods. McIlroy still needs to win the Masters, and Spieth lacks only the PGA (tee times).
