Score for Tom Watson, whose 6-under total won the nine-hole Par 3 Contest on Wednesday at Augusta National Golf Club (scores). Watson, 68, who won Masters titles in 1977 and 1981, became the oldest winner in the history of the short-course event, eclipsing the record of Sam Snead, who was 61 in 1974. Tommy Fleetwood and Thomas Pieters tied for second at 5-under 22. Six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus was among three players tied for fourth at 4-under 23. However, Hall of Famers Nicklaus, Watson and Gary Player, competing together, were upstaged on the final hole by Nicklaus’ grandson Gary Nicklaus Jr., who was summoned to hit a tee shot. Gary, 15, dressed in the traditional white caddie jumpsuit, aced the ninth hole.
Number of competitors in this week’s Masters Tournament – more than a fourth of the 87-man field – who never have won a PGA Tour event (tee times).
