Number of victories, in as many matches apiece, for Americans Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, who will square off today in the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin (Texas) Country Club. In other matches involving unbeaten players through two days of pool play, American Justin Thomas will play Italy’s Francesco Molinari, American Xander Schauffele will meet Spain’s Sergio Garcia and American Tony Finau will oppose Sweden’s Alex Noren. The winners of the 16 four-man pools will advance to Saturday’s elimination rounds (scores and pairings).


Number of birdies that American Brice Garnett rattled off in a bogey-free 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead in the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship at Corales Golf Club in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Garnett, 35, won twice last year on the Tour. He is seeking his first Tour victory in his 88th career start. Canadian Corey Conners stood second at 64. Amateur Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback who is making his PGA Tour debut on a sponsor exemption, shot 5-over 77 (scores).


First-round score for Julian Etulain, whose 9-under total leads the Tour’s Chitimacha Louisiana Open at Le Triomphe Golf Club in Broussard, La. Etulain, 29, of Argentina, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, played bogey-free golf. Canada’s Adam Svensson was second at 63 (scores).


First-round scores for American Jackie Stoelting, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall and South Korea’s Hee Young Park, who shared the lead at 6 under in the LPGA’s Kia Classic at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad, Calif. Park, who started on the back nine, birdied her final three holes to grab a share of the lead. American Cristie Kerr was among four players tied for fourth at 67. The tournament is the first of four stops in six weeks in California, with a one-week diversion to Hawaii, for the LPGA (scores).
