Apologized (sort of): J.B. Holmes, who took 4 minutes and 10 seconds to play a layup shot on the 18th hole Sunday in the Farmers Insurance Open, as playing competitors Alex Noren and Ryan Palmer – and you, the TV viewer – waited. In an off-camera interview, Holmes told Tim Rosaforte of Golf Channel that he was sorry, if it cost Noren the tournament. Noren made birdie on the par-5 closing hole at Torrey Pines, joining Palmer and eventual winner Jason Day in a playoff, which was extended by darkness into Monday.

Announced: Lane Demas, as winner of the Herbert Warren Wind Book Award, the U.S. Golf Association announced. Demas, a history professor at Central Michigan University, wrote “Game of Privilege: An African American History of Golf.” The book details the history of black golfers during segregation, the struggle to integrate public golf courses and the history of the United Golf Association, an all-black golf tour. Demas and other USGA award winners will be recognized Saturday during the association’s annual meeting in Miami.
