England’s The Belfry, a 4-time Ryder Cup site, adds Danny Willett to all-star roster of tournament hosts this week
9: Number of tournaments to be held in the United Kingdom this year, beginning with this week’s Betfred British Masters, on the European Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai schedule. Play begins Wednesday at The Belfry’s Brabazon Course in Sutton Coldfield, England. The tournament will end Saturday, allowing an extra travel day to the U.S. for next week’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, S.C. Since its return to the European Tour schedule in 2015, the British Masters has been hosted by some of the tour’s top names. This year, England’s Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters champion, will serve as host, following these tour colleagues: Ian Poulter at Woburn (2015), Luke Donald at The Grove (2016), Lee Westwood at Close House (2017 and 2020), Justin Rose at Walton Heath (2018) and Tommy Fleetwood at Hillside (2019). The Belfry has hosted four Ryder Cups, most recently in 2002, when Europe won. The Europeans have gone 2-1-1 at The Belfry, losing only in 1993 and retaining the cup with a tie in 1989. The Belfry hosted the European Tour last year when Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard won the ISPS Handa U.K. Championship. (For British Masters tee times, click here.)
