Germany’s Maximilian Kieffer shakes off playoff loss 4 days earlier to shoot 7-under 63 and help set 1st-round pace in Canary Islands
4: Number of players tied for the lead after the first round of the European Tour’s Gran Canaria Lopesan Open in Gran Canaria, Spain. Denmark’s Joachim B. Hansen, the Netherland’s Joost Luiten, Germany’s Maximilian Kieffer and France’s Robin Roussel shot 7-under 63s on Thursday at Meloneras Golf. Four days earlier, Kieffer lost to American John Catlin on the fifth hole of a playoff at the Austrian Open. Luiten, 35, a six-time winner on the European Tour, aced the par-3 15th hole. American Julian Suri, whose lone tour victory came in 2017, was among seven players tied at 64. Catlin and fellow Americans Sihwan Kim and Sean Crocker shot 67s. The tournament is the first of three consecutive €1.5 million (about $1.8 million) events for the European Tour in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the North Atlantic off the northwest coast of Africa.
