Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Matthew Wolff highlight power pairing this week at San Diego municipal complex
3: Number of players among the top 15 in the Official World Golf Ranking who will be paired together for the first two rounds of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open. Among a handful of marquee pairings for the first two rounds at Torrey Pines in San Diego, the 9 a.m. PST group on No. 1 at the South Course might be the most interesting. World No. 7 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland will tee it up with Americans Brooks Koepka and Matthew Wolff, who are ranked 12th and 15th, respectively. McIlroy will be making his 2021 debut on the PGA Tour after he finished third last week at the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Koepka, playing his first FIO since 2017, missed the cut last week at The American Express in his 2021 debut. Wolff, a native of Southern California, tied for 40th last week at PGA West’s Stadium Course. The trio, among the longest drivers in the game, will be getting an early look at Torrey Pines, which will play host to the U.S. Open in June. Among the other spotlight pairings, San Diego natives Phil Mickelson and Xander Schauffele will join Jordan Spieth in the 9:30 a.m. PST pairing on the 10th tee at the North Course, which will be used for the first two rounds. Mickelson is a two-time champion at his hometown event. In the next time on the North’s 10th tee, Americans Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson, the 2011 winner at Torrey Pines, will play at 9:40 a.m. PST. In the top international grouping, Australians Jason Day and Marc Leishman will join Spain’s Jon Rahm at 10:30 a.m. PST on the South Course’s first tee. Rahm, the 2017 FIO champion and No. 2 in the world, is the highest-ranked player in the field; Day is a two-time champion at Torrey Pines, and Leishman is the defending champion. Ten of the world’s top 20 players are entered (tee times).
