World No. 1 Jin Young Ko slips into LPGA’s season finale, and Nos. 2, 3 and 4 will be paired together at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla.
72: Number of players who will compete this week at the LPGA’s season-ending CME Group Tour Championship, which begins Thursday at the Ritz-Carlton’s Golf Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla. Highlighting the field for the no-cut event will be the top eight players in the Rolex Rankings, led by No. 1 Jin Young Ko of South Korea. Ko qualified for the final event with a tie for second in last week’s U.S. Women’s Open in only her third LPGA start this season, jumping 60 spots, to No. 45, in the season standings. She played the Korean LPGA in her homeland during the COVID-19 pandemic. No. 2-ranked Sei Young Kim of South Korea is the defending champion and will be paired with No. 3 Inbee Park of South Korea and No. 4 Danielle Kang, a two-time winner this season, and the highest-ranked American. However, one of the big story lines for the week concerns the two players who won't be competing. Germany's Sophia Popov, who won the Women's British Open, and South Korea's A Lim Kim, winner of the recent U.S. Women's Open, did not make the top-70 cutoff in the standings. They were not LPGA members when they won their major championships and thus did not accrue points for the season standings. Title sponsor CME Group was given two sponsor exemptions and picked Australia's Sarah Kemp and American Natalie Gulbis (tee times).
