Dane closes with bogey-free 67 for a 2-stroke victory at the Joburg Open, the tour’s 1st of 3 consecutive events in South Africa
146: Number of appearances on the European Tour before Denmark’s Joachim B. Hansen claimed his first victory. Hansen shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 on Sunday to overtake local favorite Wilco Nienaber and win the Joburg Open at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg. Hansen played the final 36 holes in 11 under to shoot a cumulative 19-under 265 and win by two strokes. “It's quite emotional,” said Hansen, 30, who joins rookie Rasmus Hojgaard, a two-time winner, as Danish champions in the 2019-20 season. "This is what we work for, you know? The family watching back home.” Nienaber, the 20-year-old rookie whose 337-yard average leads the tour in driving distance, failed to birdie either of the back-nine par 5s and then finished bogey-bogey to close with a 70 and solo second. Another South African, Shaun Norris, closed with 66 to take solo third at 16-under 268. The tournament, jointly sponsored by the European and Sunshine tours, was the first of three consecutive events for the European Tour in South Africa, leading into the season-ending Tour Championship in Dubai (scores).
