South Africans share lead in Joburg Open

Shaun Norris and Wilco Nienaber shoot 63s in the 1st of 3 events co-sponsored by the European and Sunshine tours in South Africa

63: Scores by co-leaders Shaun Norris and Wilco Nienaber, both of South Africa, who set the pace at 8 under Thursday in the first round of the Joburg Open, which is jointly sponsored by the European and Sunshine tours. American Johannes Veerman shared third place with Canadian Aaron Cockerill at 7-under 64. Norris, 38, a two-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, played a bogey-free round at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg in setting the standard at 8 under. Nienaber, a long-driving 20-year-old – he pounded a 439-yarder at the par-5 fourth hole, where he made birdie – turned pro last year after winning the South African Amateur. He signed for a lively scorecard: an eagle, nine birdies, five pars and three bogeys. The tournament is the first of three consecutive events for the European Tour in South Africa, leading into the season-ending Tour Championship in Dubai (scores).
