Bernhard Langer seeks missing piece on Champions Tour

The German leads the 2020 standings entering this week's Charles Schwab Cup Championship, but he never has won the season finale

3: Number of tournament rounds, instead of the usual four, for this week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship, the final event on the Champions Tour’s 2020 schedule. The adjustment to 54 holes from the usual 72-hole finale was made because of schedule changes that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the shorter timeline, the field at Phoenix Country Club has been expanded to 81 players, including 33 of the top 36 players in the tour’s season standings. Bernhard Langer, a five-time Champions Tour season winner and the leader in the 2020 standings, will be among the entrants. Langer, 63, of Germany, has 11 top-10s, including a victory and two runners-up, in 14 starts this season. Though Langer has won 41 times on the 50-and-older tour to rank second all-time to Hale Irwin’s 45, he has not won the season finale. Langer will be playing the Champions Tour finale on his road to next week’s Masters at Augusta National, where he is a two-time champion. Former Masters champions Fred Couples, Sandy Lyle, Jose Maria Olazabal, Mark O’Meara, Mike Weir and Vijay Singh also will be making final preparations for Augusta, with all except O’Meara expected to play next week (tee times).
