In his 40th career start, the Northern Irishman holds off Bernhard Langer and Jim Furyk to win the TimberTech Championship

40: Number of starts on the Champions Tour before Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke broke through for his first victory. Clarke tapped in for a two-putt birdie at the par-5 18th hole on Sunday to win the TimberTech Championship at The Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Fla. Clarke overcame a double bogey on the par-4 ninth hole to shoot 4-under 68 for a 17-under 199 total and one-stroke victory. Clarke, 52, of Northern Ireland, the 2011 British Open champion, won 14 times on his home European Tour and two more times in the U.S. Germany’s Bernhard Langer, who at 63 was seeking his 42nd victory on the 50-and-older tour, closed with 67 and shared second place with American Jim Furyk (68), who won his first two starts on the tour earlier this year. American John Daly, who led after 18 holes at 64, faded over the weekend into T-26. Daly announced in September that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer and was undergoing treatment (scores).
