Senior tour ‘rookie,’ who has averaged 67.50 per round in winning his 1st 2 starts, will go after No. 3 this weekend in North Carolina
67.50: Scoring average, in six rounds on the Champions Tour, for American Jim Furyk, who will be seeking his third victory in as many starts when the SAS Championship begins Friday in Cary, N.C. Furyk, who turned 50 on May 12, won the Ally Challenge in his Champions Tour debut in August before claiming the PURE Insurance Championship in September. He was a combined 26 under for the two events. Furyk won 17 times on the PGA Tour, including the 2003 U.S. Open, but his last victory on the big tour came 5½ years ago, at the 2015 RBC Heritage. Should he win this week at Prestonwood Country Club in suburban Raleigh, he would be the first player to win his first three starts on the 50-and-older tour. Fred Couples won three consecutive titles in 2010 as a rookie on the Champions Tour, but he was runner-up in his debut on the circuit (tee times).
