South African opens 1-stroke lead in PURE Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach entering final round
6: Number of times that South Africa’s Ernie Els has finished among the top 10 on the Champions Tour, in eight starts, since he turned 50 last fall. Els appears destined for a fifth consecutive top-10 finish – and perhaps much better – after he shot 2-under 70 on Saturday at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links to lead the Champions Tour’s PURE Insurance Championship. Els stood at 9-under 135 through 36 holes, one stroke ahead of American Dicky Pride (70). Americans Jim Furyk (73), Fred Couples (67) and Cameron Beckman (72) shared third place with South African Retief Goosen (68) and Australian Stephen Leaney (72) at 7-under 137. Els won the Hoag Classic in early March in his third start on the 50-and-older tour, before the global coronavirus pandemic suspended the season. Els, a four-time major champion, won 19 times on the PGA Tour (scores).
