Jim Furyk takes 1st step in bid to go 2-0 on Champions Tour

After winning his debut on 50-and-older tour last month, Furyk shoots 64 to lead in 1st round at Pebble Beach

64: First-round score for American Jim Furyk, whose 8-under total led the Champions Tour’s PURE Insurance Championship on Friday at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. South African Ernie Els, American Cameron Beckman and Australian Stephen Leaney shared second place at 65. Furyk, who turned 50 in May, won the Ally Challenge last month in his debut on the senior tour. Starting on the back nine at the iconic seaside links, Furyk birdied four of his first six holes and then birdied four of his final six for an 8-under total. Furyk is a 17-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 2003 U.S. Open. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Pebble Beach event is being played without First Tee juniors, and the amateur field has been reduced to 80 contestants, each of whom will team with one professional. The 54-hole event has two concurrent competitions: professional (individual) and pro-am team (four-ball). A cut will be made for amateurs after 36 holes, with the low 12 advancing to Sunday’s final round. There will be no cut for the professionals (scores).
