South African claims 2-stroke triumph in Portugal Masters after having won on his native Sunshine Tour a week earlier
2-1-1: Consecutive finishes in the past three weeks on major professional tours for South Africa’s George Coetzee, who won the European Tour’s Portugal Masters on Sunday in Vilamoura, Portugal. One week earlier, Coetzee won the Titleist Championship on the Sunshine Tour in his homeland. That result came one week after he tied for second in the African Bank Sunshine Tour Championship. In winning for the fifth time on the European Tour, Coetzee closed with a bogey-free 5-under 66 at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course for a 16-under 268 total and two-stroke victory. “The work me and my psychologist have been doing, and my coach, it’s nice to see it pay off,” he said. England’s Laurie Canter shot 66 to finish runner-up at 14-under 270. England’s Tommy Fleetwood, who at No. 16 in the Official World Golf Ranking was the highest-ranked player in the field, shot 64 to share third with Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren (65) at 13-under 271 (scores). The Portugal Masters was the second of three events on the Iberian Peninsula Swing of the tour's revised schedule. This week, the Portugal Open will be played at Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort in Obidos, Portugal.
