Royal Troon plays host to its 1st Women’s Open

9-time site of British Open welcomes women for their 1st major championship of the abbreviated season

9: Number of times that Royal Troon, site of this week’s AIG Women’s Open, has played host to the British Open. This will be the first visit for the Women’s Open to the links course in Troon, Scotland. In 2016, at the most recent British Open to visit Royal Troon, Henrik Stenson outdueled Phil Mickelson to win the Claret Jug. Champions such as Arthur Havers (1923), Bobby Locke (1950), Arnold Palmer (1962), Tom Weiskopf (1973), Tom Watson (1982), Mark Calcavecchia (1989), Justin Leonard (1997) and Todd Hamilton (2004) also have won at Troon. Play begins Thursday in the LPGA’s first major championship of a season abbreviated by the global coronavirus pandemic (tee times).
