PGA Tour prepares for season’s biggest cut: Top 125

Wyndham Championship, which begins Thursday in Greensboro, N.C., will determine the 125 players who will start the 3-tournament playoffs that launch next week in suburban Boston

125: This week’s magic number at the Wyndham Championship, which as the PGA Tour’s final regular-season event will determine the field for next week’s first playoff event. The top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings after Sunday’s final round at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., will advance to the first of three playoff events. The Northern Trust will be played Aug. 20-23 at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. From there, the top 70 will advance to the BMM Championship on Aug. 27-30 at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club. Out of the BMW, the top 30 will qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship on Sept. 4-7 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. J.T. Poston, a native of Hickory, N.C., who played college golf at Western Carolina, will be the defending champion at the Wyndham (tee times).
