American finishes with an eagle and a birdie on his final 3 holes, worth 7 points, to edge Troy Merritt in the PGA Tour's only modified Stableford event
7: Number of points that Richy Werenski scored on the final three holes to win the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship on Sunday in Truckee, Calif. The victory, his first on the PGA Tour, earned Werenski, 28, a spot in this week’s PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Werenski holed out for eagle at the par-4 16th and then made birdie on the par-4 18th – worth five and two points, respectively, under the modified Stableford scoring format, to total 39 points at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood course and win. Troy Merritt, who was unable to pick up any points on the back nine, finished second with 38 points. Werenski had tied for third a week earlier at the 3M Open. The Barracuda is the only event on Tour to use the modified Stableford scoring (scores).
