American earns first title since college days at Wake Forest and a spot in U.S. Open
15: Number of strokes under par that American Will Zalatoris finished to win the Korn Ferry Tour’s TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes on Saturday in Berthoud, Colo. Zalatoris closed with a 3-under 69 for a 273 total and one-stroke victory over American Chase Johnson (63). It was the first victory for Zalatoris in 26 starts on the PGA Tour’s top developmental tour. “It still hasn’t sunk in; that’s the part that’s kind of crazy,” said Zalatoris, 23, who grew up in Plano, Texas, and won the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur before he earned college all-America honors at Wake Forest. It was his first victory since Sept. 17, 2017, when he tied for first at Duke’s Rod Myers Invitational before turning pro midway through his senior year. “We’re one step closer to getting our [PGA Tour] card, so two more [victories] to go.” The victory secured a spot in the U.S. Open, which canceled qualifying and has adopted all-exempt criteria because of the coronavirus pandemic (scores).
