Canadian shoots career-low 60 to open 3-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland, with Phil Mickelson among a group another stroke back
60: Score for Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes, who opened a three-stroke lead at 10 under Thursday in the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship. Hughes, 29, ran off five consecutive birdies on his front nine (Nos. 14-18) at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., en route to a bogey-free day and a career-low score. Hughes is seeking his second Tour victory and first since the 2016 RSM Classic. Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking, was tied for second with American Xander Schauffele and Norway’s Viktor Hovland at 7-under 63. American Phil Mickelson, a two-time Travelers champion, was among six players tied for fifth at 64. The tournament began one day after a series of high-profile player withdrawals related to coronavirus testing (scores).
