4-time major champion from South Africa posts 2-stroke victory in Hoag Classic
3: Number of career starts on the Champions Tour for South African Ernie Els, who posted his first victory on the 50-and-older tour Sunday. Els closed with a 4-under 67 for a 16-under 197 total and two-stroke victory at the Hoag Classic at Newport Beach (Calif.) Country Club. After squandering his overnight one-stroke lead, Els birdied Nos. 12 and 15 before makes pars the rest of the way. The victory was Els’ first title since the 2013 BMW International Open on the European Tour. Els, 50, won 19 times on the PGA Tour, including four major championships. Americans Fred Couples (66) and Glen Day (64) shared second place with Sweden’s Robert Karlsson (66) at 14-under 199 (scores).
