Madelene Sagstrom wins 1st LPGA crown

After shaky start, Sagstrom rallies to post 1-stroke victory at Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio

69: Number of LPGA starts, spanning three-plus seasons, that Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom needed to post her first victory. Sagstrom rallied from a slow start Sunday for a one-stroke victory in the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio in Boca Raton, Fla. Sagstrom found herself 2 over through the first five holes at Boca Rio Golf Club before she played the final 13 holes in 4 under to shoot 2-under 70 for a 17-under 271 total. Sagstrom, 27, who turned pro in 2015 out of LSU, won three times on the Symetra Tour in 2016 and claimed the season money title to earn a promotion to the LPGA. Japan’s Nasa Hataoka (69) bogeyed the par-4 18th and finished second at 16-under 272, with American Danielle Kang (69) another stroke behind, in third place. It was the second tournament in Florida to start the season before the LPGA takes a week off and then plays consecutive events in Australia ahead of a three-stop Asia Swing (scores).
